Diwali Explained

Taking place on 19th October 2017, Diwali is also known as the festival of light. The date of the Hindu festival is calculated by the position of the moon and the Hindu lunar calendar, and usually takes place in October or November.

The night before Diwali begins is known as Narak Chaturdasi – representing the day that the Hindu demon Narakaasura was defeated. Diwali then begins and is celebrated over a number of days. The festival is generally celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains worldwide by hosting and attending street parties and often releasing fireworks.

Diwali translates as ‘series of lights’ and during the festival many people decorate their houses with candles and lanterns. The celebration is meant to represent light over darkness and the belief that good with always win over evil.

The last day of the celebrations is known as Bhaiyadooj or ‘feast to brothers,’ which commemorates the bond between siblings, and meals are hosted by sisters in honour of their bothers. It’s a great occasion to spend time with family and loved ones and strengthen this vital relationship.
